WICOMICO COUNTY, MARYLAND
WILLS
LIBER WB#1
December 1867-Deceinber 1879
The following wills have been abstracted from the Wcimico county Register of Wills documents which can be found on microfilm MSA CR65 from the Maryland Hall of Records. Wicomico county was established in 1 867 out of the Worcester and Somerset Counties.
We have attempted to abstract as much vital information as possible in order to facilitate the researcher in their quest. The first date given refers to the date the will was written— the second date is that of the probate of the will. Following down, are the various legatees and relationship (when mentioned) to the testator. We have listed all bequests following the legatee's name and have done so by pulling all the information together. In many of the wills, the bequests are scattered about, so that our abstracts do not fully follow the exact order in which the will was written. We have also included the tract names and the names of individuals —where mentioned —whose property lay adjacent to the testator's land.
One of the difficulties of abstracting old documents is the handwriting of the clerk. The wills contained on the microfilm are all clerk's copies of the original document. Thus, the clerk did copy verbatim the will as it had been dictated onto the original. In many cases these were written and spelled the same as the testator spoke which causes some problems of translation. However it is important for the researcher in some instances as it gives one a sense of how the testator spoke and what type of dialect he may have had. The most obvious is the spelling of some of the names — Heser, for "Hester" or "Sary" for "Sarah" and "Alec" for "Alice" Also the dialect of the shore made it common for the inhabitants to use the words "Daster" or "dater" for daughter. Where names or tract names or even items are indecipherable, we have placed (?) after the word in question.
At the end of the will are the signatures of the subscribing witnesses-being those who could swear that the will was the acknowledged will of the testator and that he was of sound mind when the document was written. Then came: refers to those witnesses who appeared before the magistrates to swear of their presence and the authenticity of the will.
Following Then came" May be another "Then came:" in which the widow appeared before the magistrates and either agreed to abide by the legacies and divisions of the will as written, or
refused and instead elected to have her lawful thirds, which means she could— by law— take one third (her dower portion) of the testator's estate both in real estate and personal estate.

WICOMICO COUNTY, MARYLAND
WILLS
LIBER WB#1
December 1880- 1897
The following wills have been abstracted from the Wcimico county Register of Wills documents which can be found on microfilm MSA CR65 and MSA CR66 from the Maryland Hall of Records. Wicomico county was established in 1867 out of the Worcester and Somerset Counties.
We have also included the tract names and the names of individuals -where mentioned -whose property lay adjacent to the testator's land.
The most obvious is the spelling of some of the names— Heser, for "Hester" or "Sary" for "Sarah" and "Alec" for "Alice" Also the dialect of the shore made it common for the inhabitants to use the words "Daster" or "dater" for daughter. Where names or tract names or even items are indecipherable, we have placed (?) after the word in question.
At the end of the will are the signatures of the subscribing witnesses— being those who could swear that the will was the acknowledged will of the testator and that he was of sound mind when the document was written.
