^teface.
The present Vohime contains the original notes of the Visitation of Somersetshire, made in the year 1623 by Henry St. George and Sampson Lennard under Camden, taken from Harl. MS. 1141. Most of the Pedigrees are subscribed by the heads of families, and some are marked with a cross and the word " entered." At the end are some added by Rich. Mundy, with drawings of Coats of Arms. Besides the Pedigrees, there are many notes made by the Heralds about the places where they stayed, the gentlemen already mentioned in the Visitation, and others who were disclaimed. The Editor regrets that circiuustances prevented his making a complete collation of the other MSS. in the British Musei;m.* This, however, was not part of the original design, and he has thought it better on the whole to confine himself strictly to what was first con- templated, viz., giving a copy of MS. 1141. He has only added a few brief notes, and the notices of armorial bearings, about which very little information is given in the MS.
* MS. liib is Withie's copy, and inolutles R. Brooke's Visitation of 1591, and E. Cooke's of 1673. MS. 1.559 contains, besides these, some additions by R. Mundy, and notes from certain Churches.
